What is a wind uplift rating?

A wind uplift rating is the maximum wind pressure (in pounds per square foot) that a roofing system can resist before the materials begin to lift or separate from the structure, determined through standardized testing.

A wind uplift rating indicates the maximum wind pressure a roofing assembly can endure before components lift away from the deck or building envelope. This rating comes from testing conducted under the UL 580 standard, which simulates extreme wind conditions in a laboratory setting. The test measures pressures in pounds per square foot (psf) and determines at what point a roof system fails by uplifting.

Connecticut contractors rely on wind uplift ratings to match roofing systems to local wind exposure zones. Building codes in Connecticut, particularly in coastal and elevated areas, mandate minimum uplift ratings based on wind speed calculations for your specific location. A roof with a 90 psf rating will perform differently than one rated for 120 psf under the same storm conditions.

The uplift rating depends on multiple factors: fastener spacing, adhesive type, substrate preparation, and whether the roof is a single-ply membrane, metal panel system, or shingle assembly. Wind uplift failure happens when the pressure underneath the roofing material exceeds its ability to stay attached, leading to peeling, billowing, or complete system loss.

Contractors use this rating during design to ensure compliance with local codes and to estimate roof durability in your region's climate. Higher-rated systems cost more upfront but provide greater protection in areas prone to severe wind events.
